"Lord, your love is eternal; do not forsake the work of your hands." (Ps 138:8)
In all of his humility, I think St Peter might have agreed with the comedian, Groucho Marx, who said, "I don't care to belong to any club that will have me as a member. Jesus not only wanted Peter for His club, He wanted him to be the first president. This was the same Peter who had shown his lack of fidelity any number of times. This was the same Peter who said, "I do not know the man [Jesus]." And yet in this weekend's readings, it's also the same Peter who says from the bottom of his heart: "You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God." Jesus then replies, "Blessed are you." He says the same to us as well when we finally (and sincerely) come around in faith.
